Putney Society response to the government consultation on Heathrow Expansion (HENPS)

The Putney Society has responded to the government consultation which closes on September 1st 2026

The Putney Society is the civic society for Putney and Roehampton. Putney suffers substantial impacts from aircraft noise, as the approach to Heathrow`s southern runway (nine miles to our west) passes over the northern part of Putney, and the approach to the northern runway is also close. At present, Roehampton suffers less severely. The response focuses on noise impacts.

HENPS is in our view seriously deficient as regards noise impacts.‍ ‍

Many of the most important impacts are either not spelt out and/or will not be known until the current airspace re-design project is further advanced.

In summary, we are calling for:

● guaranteed respite from aircraft noise for at least nine hours a day.

● a condition that the total noise impact of a three-runway Heathrow should be no greater than the currently forecast impact of the airport without a third runway.

● a seven-hour night flight ban as soon as daytime capacity allows; to be extended to eight hours no later than when a third runway opens.

● a commitment in principle to steeper descent approaches.
